The Animation Book, Crown Publishers, New York, 1998
A comprehensive guide to the making of animated films from Flip-Books to Sound Cartoons to 3-D Animation. The volume serves as a learning resource and workbook, with clear, complete, step-by-step instructions all animation techniques. It provides projects designed to sharpen perceptions, expand artistic choices, and stimulate the imagination. The volume is richly designed with production stills, key frames and original illustrations. Its approach is informal and experimental, sharing the author’s conviction that personal expression is a foundation for all good art and that a book for developing artists should excite and guide, rather than dictate. This how-two volume has become a standard text with sales approaching 100,000.

Mediapedia II (working title) Same sort of lexicon as the first volume but this will cover “time based” media forms including Video, Animation, 3D illustration, Audio and Interactive Design.

Short Films (working title) Today’s broadband networks have led to a renaissance in making short films – anachronistically labeled as “film” even though 99% are digital video. This volume will go deeply into the specific skill sets and conventions in making movies that are 3 to 5 minutes or less. The volume will also go into the history and the aesthetics of the short film form, using extensive storyboards and links to the shorts themselves.

Teaching The Media (working title)I have been asked by colleagues for copies of the various syllabi and resource lists that I use in my teaching. At some point I will collect these into a small volume to be published as an eBook.
