Extra Stuff
Mediapedia evolved through my teaching in the MA program in Media Studies at The New School, an interesting modern university in New York’s Greenwich Village. Parson’s School of Design is a sister program at The New School, which also has a strong undergraduate program, The Eugene Lange College, and other graduate programs in Social Research, Management & Urban Policy, Drama, Music and Jazz.

Because the book is targeted at general readers, I’ve kept the writing crisp and colloquial and deleted a bunch of items about media production and aesthetics. There were different reasons for cutting them.  Some are pretty abstract. Some deal with tangled topics like legal rights and clearances. Some were cut because there wasn’t enough space.

This companion site seems a great backdoor for offering some of the things that proved quite valuable in the classroom. From time to time I will be adding a few more extra items. I’d love feedback on these PDFs – or on topics you think belong here.

Giving and Getting Notes
This is not obvious stuff. You can break someone’s heart by giving unscreened feedback. Or you can have your own creative psyche mau-mau-ed by those whose opinions you seek.

Media Chops Inventory
Here is a questionnaire that I give my students. It helps them gauge their facility among a broad range of media making skills. Valuable as an aid in assessing what is often involved in creative production.
